The Persistent Gift of Ordinary Hands
M.J. Heisey, Pulpit Guest
M.J. Heisey, a history professor at SUNY Potsdam, has worked with two communities drawn together by arpilleras. Heisey is part of a North Country team currently organizing exhibits and cultural programming around these patchwork tapestries made by Chilean women in the 1970s and 1980s to challenge the Pinochet dictatorship. During that time, Heisey worked for Jubilee Crafts, a pioneering fair-trade organization that imported and sold arpilleras. She will speak about how the power and beauty of the tapestries have drawn her into community efforts and how they continue to be at work in the world today.
