This Old House

Why should I be forced into reparations when my ancestors never owned slaves or stole land from indigenous communities? A friend of mine once asked me that, and I think I have an answer. Inheriting a country and a social system is like moving into an old house. We may have not chosen the wall paint colors and carpet in the kitchen, but we have an obligation to work with it to make it better.
