Institutions: To Trust or Not to Trust

According to numerous surveys, Americans are becoming more and more distrustful of institutions. The military and police used to be very trusted but even they are declining. People are not trusting government agencies, churches, and not even public schools. Is some distrust in institutions warranted? Where is all this skepticism and suspicion coming from; is it good or bad?
