Standing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) 11.17.16

The North Country chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), a national network of groups and individuals organizing with the goal of involving more white people in the fight for racial justice, will hold a meeting at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Canton on Thursday, November 17, at 6 p.m. The North Country chapter is in the beginning stages of organization in Plattsburgh, and is looking to gather interested participants in this part of the region.

SURJ works to connect people across the country while supporting and collaborating with local and national racial justice organizing efforts. SURJ provides a space to build relationships, skills and political analysis to act for change.  Through community organizing, mobilizing and education, SURJ moves white people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for justice with passion and accountability.

The Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 3½ East Main Street, across from the Village park in Canton. Everyone is welcome to this organizational meeting. More information can be found at showingupforracialjustice.org or by emailing SURJNorthCountryNY@gmail.com.

hi… this looks like a great organization with admirable goals – i think you may want to consider re-writing the following phrase in the description above; ‘the North Country chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), a national network of groups and individuals organizing white people for racial justice…”

You may want to consider something like; The North Country chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), a national network of groups and individuals organizing with the goal of involving more white people in the fight for racial justice…”

it currently could easily be misinterpreted as exclusive of POC.

Thanks, Danny, we’ve been following the conversation. We used language supplied by the organizers in Plattsburgh, but agree that a change may allay confusion and negative reaction. Thanks for your suggestion.
