The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton has been actively involved in promoting social justice the wider community for nearly two centuries. We are looking to hire a part-time Social Justice Coordinator to take our commitment to justice to the next level.
Position Type: 10 hours a week, flexible hours, $16 an hour, and paid time off.
Position Purpose: The Social Justice Coordinator works closely with the Minister and volunteer leaders to further our vision for social justice in the congregation and the wider community by increasing our visibility and promoting participation in justice programing. This includes managing existing social justice efforts, developing and implementing new projects, partnering with outside organizations, promoting opportunities to connect, and supporting the work of congregational social justice groups, so that our congregants have meaningful volunteer experiences.
Reports to: Minister
Duties and Responsibilities
Foster congregational participation and volunteerism in justice activities
- Collaborate with the Minister and volunteer leaders to organize events and initiatives to promote our vision for a just and peaceful world
- Maintain visibility of justice programming through internal and external publicity
- Recruit new volunteers
Implement effective social justice actions
- Support the Social Action Committee and other justice groups of the congregation
- Build strong relationships with local partnerships (including but not limited to Planned Parenthood, four area universities, 350.org, Grace House, Amigos in Salud, Poor People’s Campaign, GardenShare, Church and Community Program)
- Work with volunteer leadership in the congregation to develop action strategies
- Act as contact for justice-related requests from congregation and wider community
- Develop and track goals and activities
- Attend periodic staff and supervisory meetings
Skills/Qualities
- Highly organized
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Competent using digital technology
- Comfortable working across cultures, coalitions, generations, and diverse religious and spiritual communities
- Must be committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression
- Supports the mission of the UU Church of Canton
- Background in community organizing, program management, or volunteer management a plus
- Likes to work with youth and children a plus
Working Conditions
Available at least one Sunday morning per month and some evenings with possibility of some work from home.
