The Social Justice Initiative 2019 of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton invites church members and the public to an introduction to the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) on Sunday, February 24 at noon in the Romer Room. Presenters Denise Mock (member of the UU’s Social Action Committee) and Sean Vitali will share their experiences with this program which provides experiential workshops designed to help communities and individuals break down barriers to open communication, challenge racial and gender-related stereotypes, and encourage self-worth and compassion for others. Originally created in a New York prison during the 1970s as an antidote to systemic violence at the facility, AVP has spread throughout the world in prisons and communities alike. This session provides an introduction to a full AVP workshop to be scheduled later in the fall. Come learn about AVP and how it has positively affected both incarcerated and free populations.
