POSITION TITLE: Director of Music

START DATE: Summer/Fall of 2021

POSITION PURPOSE: Oversees and leads the congregation’s music ministry in collaboration with the Minister and in alignment with our mission.

REPORTS TO: Minister 

HOURS, COMPENSATION, BENEFITS: 

  • This position is 10 hours per week.
  • Annual Salary of $11,000
  • 4 Weeks of Vacation 
  • Professional Expenses

DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Provides piano, guitar, or organ accompaniment for hymns/songs for Sunday services with one Sunday off per month
  • Arranges for suitable coverage of these responsibilities when on leave or vacation 
  • Directs the handbell choir (weekly rehearsals, performances every 6 weeks Sept-June)  
  • Directs the vocal choir and provides or arranges for accompaniment when required (weekly rehearsals, twice a month performances Sept-June)
  • Works in collaboration with the Minister on selecting diverse music for Worship
  • Identifies, recruits, nurtures, educates, and inspires singers and other musicians by encouraging their participation in the music activities of the Church 
  • Supports congregational singing; including introducing new music to congregation 
  • Oversees the maintenance and repair of the Congregation’s pianos, organ, and any other musical instruments
  • Assists in the preparation and management of the music program budget
  • Attends monthly all staff meeting
  • Becomes a member of the Association of Unitarian Unitarian Universalist Music Ministries (AUUMM) 
  • Enjoys working with a congregation that will respect your musical strengths and talents

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent life experience directing music programs 

Skills

  • Demonstrate excellence in choral conducting and keyboard/guitar accompaniment 
  • Strong and effective communication, relationship, and organizational skills 
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn UU values and culture as they apply to the music programs of the congregation.
