Memorial Garden
The Memorial garden is located on the west side of the church. It is a space set aside for reflection and remembrance of loved ones, and for interment of their ashes. It is landscaped as a garden and will be kept as such. The church, acting through Church Council, may relocate the Memorial Garden or the Memorial Plaque in the event that such changes are necessary or desirable.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton is committed to maintaining the Memorial Garden and the Memorial Plaque so long as the church exists.
Interment of Ashes
Parishioners, former parishioners and members of their families may have their ashes interred in the Memorial Garden. Others may be included at the minister’s discretion. Arrangements for interment are made with the minister or with a member of the Memorial Committee.
Ashes are buried in a biodegradable container and will not be recoverable. Interment plots must be at least three feet from the church building. No plot markings will be permitted. The exact location of each interment is recorded on a grid. Should the need for space arise, burial places may be reused after a 10-year period.
Memorial Plaque
A Memorial Plaque in the sanctuary displays the name, and date of birth and death, of each person memorialized.
Permanent records that record the information contained on the plaque will be kept along with biographical information (when provided) for church and family use.
Support of the Garden and Plaque
A memorial fee (historically and currently $150) must be paid or arranged for prior to inclusion on the plaque, entry in the records and interment of ashes. The fee may be reduced or waived at the minister’s discretion. This fee supports purchase of an individual brass plate for the plaque, a certificate of memorial and interment rights, entry of information in the records, care of the garden and, if the family wishes, interment of ashes in the garden.
All funds received will be kept in a separate account and utilized for purposes pertaining to the garden or work of the committee. Upon recommendation of the Memorial Committee and approval of Church Council funds deemed in excess of needs may be transferred for other church functions.
