Back to School 2023

Our church participates in the annual Church and Community Program’s  “School Supplies” program. Each member church is asked to focus on one type of supplies (e.g., pencils, notebook paper, markers). These are what teachers request individual students bring on the first day. Unsurprisingly, some parents can’t afford to buy the whole list, and that is where our church congregations help out. We expect about 280 kids to be served by the program this year.

This year, UU Church members have been asked to provide notebook filler paper (both wide-ruled and college-ruled). To participate, you can buy one (or a few) packs of notebook paper and place them into the Church and Community food box in the social room at church. Deadline is July 31.

If you are unable to get to the store and buy notebook paper, you can make a monetary donation. Checks can be sent to Church and Community Program (memo: UU notebook paper), PO Box 55, Canton NY 13617. Or you can donate online at the Church and Community Program website ccpcanton.org (be sure to add UU Notebook Paper in the note section). Any way you can help would be greatly appreciated and will make a difference for the kids who served.

Can you continue to help Church Community Program in other ways?

First, each member church is allotted three seats on the CCP Board.  Cliff Westerling and Sue Hayden need a third UU Church member to join them in sharing ideas with a motivated and most enjoyable group.  Please see or call Sue or Cliff for more information.

Secondly, as we move into summer, our need for food always rises, especially because children are home from school. We need and appreciate every single donation. Soups, canned stew, mac and cheese, breakfast bars, and granola are popular. Treats such as cookies and cake or brownie mixes help brighten a day. Some of us add “CCP” to our grocery list so we remember to help those in need. Can we all, children included, work to fill our CCP donation box in the Social Room every Sunday?

Thirdly, we lack fresh food this time of year. Supermarkets donate, but they do not have much left. If you can share a BOGO bag of apples or potatoes, etc., that would be great. And, to all our gardeners, fresh produce is so appreciated; even if you have only a few extra cucumbers, our clients will appreciate the taste of summer.

As always, thank you for your support. Contact CCP Director Connie Jenkins by email or call 315-386-3534 to volunteer in the Thrift Shop, at the Food Pantry, or to join the Senior Squad that delivers food. Then sign up to receive our newsletter – and remember to see Sue Hayden or Cliff Westerling if you’re interested in joining our Board.
