Liberal theology has always emphasized autonomy and freedom. We are not damned to live a certain way but have a choice in the matter. In the words of activist and humanitarian the Rev. Waitsill Sharp, “God is to be interpreted by the liberty of the human spirit. So I do what I do without piety but to the greater glory and freedom of the human spirit.”
