Every day on the news we hear more stories of the struggles faced by refugees from conflict and persecution, people fleeing from Syria, Afghanistan, Africa, and many other countries. To compound the problems, receiving countries, especially in Europe, Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey, are being overwhelmed by the sheer numbers crossing their borders seeking sanctuary. In looking for ways we might be of help, we kept hearing about the work of the International Rescue Committee ( as they provide care and support to these refugees fleeing war and persecution. Their staff members frequently report on the PBS NewsHour about the challenges faced by millions. IRC has been in the thick of every refugee crisis since World War II, stretching every dollar of support to its fullest.
According to their website. “The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 25 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.”
On Sunday, November 1, we will receive our Social Action Shared Offering (SASO) in support of the work of the International Rescue Committee, including their work during the current crises in Europe and elsewhere. If you will not be in church on November 1 and would like to donate, please consider sending a check to the church office (memo “SASO-Refugees”). Please also check the Social Action bulletin board for more information on ways you can help.
