HeartStrong Founder in Canton

Marc Adams, Lambda Literary Award finalist and Silver Pen Award recipient for his autobiography, The Preacher’s Son, will make two public appearances in Canton on Sunday, September 21:

At 10:30 a.m., Adams will give a sermon entitled "From Fundamentalism to Freedom" at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3 1/2 East Main Street.

Then, at 8:00 p.m., he will give a presentation for the entire community at Herring-Cole Hall, St. Lawrence University. This program will be followed by a reception.

Adams grew up the gay son of a fundamentalist Baptist preacher in rural Pennsylvania, where he endured a childhood of physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse. He went on to attend Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University, and went through so-called "reparative therapy." At each Canton presentation, he will share different aspects of his long journey to self-acceptance and his transformation from "ex-gay" to proud GLBT activist. He has recently written (lost)Found, a sequel to The Preacher’s Son.

Marc Adams is also the founder of HeartStrong, a non-profit educational organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students at religious colleges. Since its beginnings in 1996, HeartStrong has provided hope and help for hundreds of GLBT students. Adams has spoken at colleges and churches all over the country. His visit to the North Country is co-sponsored by PFLAG, Prism, St. Lawrence University, and the Unitarian Universalist Church. All are welcome at both events.
