Social Action

The Social Action Committee works to help all members of the congregation live their values by providing information and education on issues of social concern at the local, national, and international levels, and by offering opportunities for advocacy and action. Work for social justice and community service are responsibilities shared by all church members and staff; ideas for and leadership of specific projects can come from both inside and outside the Social Action Committee.

Recent initiatives of the Social Action Committee include:

• Educating the congregation and community on social justice issues through a social action listserv, information tables after church, Social Action Shared Offerings, speakers, films, and presentations (for the congregation and/or for the wider community), newsletter articles, etc.

• Offering opportunities for advocacy, such as letter-writing campaigns, petitions, lobby days, etc.

• Supporting and encouraging on-going and one-time service projects.

• Keeping the congregation apprised of the social justice activities of the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, the St. Lawrence UU District (including the Chalice Lighters Program), and other UU organizations.

• Coordinating the Rachel Somers Grant Social Action Award selection process.
